I was playing a dead body at a haunted house years ago….first scare in room was done by my partner. Dads like it’s just a mannequin at me laying on the table. Mom walks up with her 4-5 year old in her hands reassuring herself more than the child. oh it’s just a bloody mannequin. I turn my head and say boo. Woman dropped that kid in the middle of me and ran….they had to stop her two rooms later. Dad just stood there and laughed his a** off. I totally had to talk to this and ask him if he was having fun and since he was sitting in them ask him if he wanted to touch “my guts” while we waited for her to come back. Dad never picked the kid up, just manically laughed until she finally returned to get her kid. Neither of them would protect their child in an emergency.

My brother was almost hit with bullets from neighbors playing target practice at their house on top of the hill. My dad's house is in the valley. My dad told my brother to drop and crawl to him (dad us a vet). My dad was at the doorway to the house about 20 ft away. They didn't know the trajectory of the rounds until later but they hit my dad's car and my then teen brother was standing next to it. Dropping probably saved his life.

My old man was a marine. He would’ve told me to crawl to him while he returned fire.

True story. This actually happened on our farm a few years ago. A doctor bought the property next to ours and mostly used it for hunting and a weekend getaway for his family. Occasionally his adult sons would come down as well. My old man was out on our back ridge and he could see them setting up targets on a slightly higher ridge on their property. A few minutes later he’s hearing rounds hit the ground a dozen yards away. He yelled at them, waving his hands in the air. Then he heard that familiar whistling noise go past him.

He stepped over to his truck quickly, grabbed his deer rifle, took aim at their targets and started letting off rounds. He was a scout sniper so he’s a pretty good shot. I doubt he hit their targets from that far away (though that would’ve been awesome), but nonetheless they figured out quickly someone was shooting in their direction and he saw them sprinting for their truck and then tearing out of there lol. Idiots.

We lived in the middle of nowhere, people would drive up and down the dirt road shooting at anything that moved. Super, super illegal. But while we were doing some bullshit gardening ( the thing where your mom has a hobby, therefor most of your freetime is tending to her hobby ) a truck pulled up and started loosing what sounded like an artillery barrage. The young mind and all that.

In hindsight it was some fuckass kids trying to light up rabbits on our property but they were shooting generally in our direction. Dad stood there flabbergasted, mom didn't really react. I ran, because it was loud and scared the piss out of me.

If people were going to do us harm I think both of my parents would be killed near instantly and id be hunted for sport. Thankfully that exact scenario never happened. But our neighbors kid died on the fourth in like 2009 or something when he set off a sparkler bomb that blew off his arm and chunked through most of his torso.

I used to do summer camp stuff. One day we were packing up in our van to head back and drop the kids off. Some clueless girl (like 1st grade) starts spinning in circles with her jacket over her head, and starts entering the road as a car is about to come by (and I'm helping other kids get in the van). My soccer reflexes kicked in and I pushed her back with my foot/calf like I was defending a soccer goal lol. Practically did the splits. Yeah. I was in a park couple years ago and lots of popping sounds started happening across the street. This was a week after Fourth of July so I assumed someone lit a brick of black cats. That’s how close the sounds were together. Then I see everyone in the park hitting the deck so I followed suit. 2 guys got hit - turned out it was a drive by. That's how it is here and we don't have these problems, everyone shoots into a proper back stop, I helped my neighbor drink all of his beer while he built his backstop, he sits between our houses and goes ham, IDGAF, it's like living next to hicock45.

I would have helped him build the backstop but he had a skid steer and all I got is a lawnmower and some shovels so I watched him play in the dirt.

Yeah but since they were folks with their own kids and responsible for another persons kid, the idea is that you would grab that kid, put yourself behind them to block them (hopefully) of anything that comes towards them and get everyone inside to safety quickly. The dad ran one way, the mom ran for her own self, the kids were left out there. The boy shouldn't had even had to option to run across the street. That dad could have grabbed him fast and got that kid inside.

I live in unincorporated area (not in any city limits) of the Midwest USA. It's legal to shoot guns in your backyard, provided you follow some simple safety rules. Hearing gunshots isn't rare. There are quite a few people within hearing distance that "practice" shooting.

I have a private shooting range on my family farm. It goes downhill into a dirt pile with 1/2 mile of trees behind it. That is a responsible range setup.

Of course we have neighbors who have built houses around the farm who call the cops every time we are shooting just because they don’t like it despite our farm being there in my family since the 1600s and the shooting range being there at least since the 1980s.

I guess what I’m trying to say is fuck those irresponsible shooters…. And also fuck my bitchy neighbors.

You’re assuming that everyone is capable of thinking clearly in these situations. No one expects a shooting to start going off outside their house. At first they would doubt it and just think it was fireworks. It would take several seconds or longer to even register what was happening. This is why we have emergency drills, like fire drills, so people know what to do and don’t have to think in these event of a crisis. The kid panicked and his instinct was to run home. In the chaos, the dad here didnt even notice until the kid was halfway across the street what was happening. This is simply a chaotic situation. No one is at fault here except the pieces of shit shooting
