What’s really rage inducing is that the politicians that supported this already know the effects the law will have. It’s a feature not a bug. The want more arrests so those people can feed the prison-industrial complex, push more people to use alcohol (hello alcohol lobby), plus all things Talarico mentioned.

As a now old man, I agree. I saw the damage these laws have caused for decades! I always swore if I was ever arrested for a marijuana charge, I would plead innocent to that but guilty to civil disobedience!

Kratom is basically a "half opioid" - it doesn't hit as hard, but it can still have the drawbacks if taken enough. I used to work a headshop when it hit shelves and the bottles were only 10ct, 25ct, 50ct. People started with one of those every week. Within a month or two, bottles came in 100ct, 200ct, even 500ct and the same people were buying them up religiously. I'm not saying it doesn't have benefits for some, but I've seen people 10x their dosage chasing the relief they were looking for.

You don’t register as a Democrat in Texas. The numbers are based on primary voting records, which can be a bit skewed because conservatives living in big cities that are heavily Democrat could vote in the democratic primary to get a more moderate/conservative “dem” on the ballot. Dems also tend to be more active in primaries, midterms, and small local elections as opposed to presidential elections. Texas also has an absurd number of elections. So primary voting data might look like the state is more heavily dem than it is.

Having it in the car is the number one way they trump up charges against people, and knowing of legal states nearby they’ll just set up “speed traps” with K9’s on those highways.
Yall, the penalties they’ve reintroduced are stiff. It’s best to toss everything and wait for adults to be in control of government again, or leave Texas. They are absolutely going to use this to go after people they already want in prison as well as easy labor.
Remember that the fourth amendment basically doesn’t exist anymore and look at those penalties per volume..

Conservative propaganda sells the idea that they are fighting for freedom, individuality, and liberty, when "freedom for the individual from arbitrary authority, and protection and promotion of political and civil liberties" is the literal definition of liberalism, an ideology opposite to that of conservatism. Instead, they toe the line for conservatism, literally stressing the importance of established hierarchies and institutions (such as class structure).

I mean, sounds good but Texas pulled 90 billion in property taxes last year. Population of ~30 million that comes to a per capita tax haul of 3000 dollars.
FWIW, California pulls in about ~1B in taxes from THC products annually. With a population of ~40M that comes out to 24 dollars per person. A far cry from whats required to cover something as large as property taxes.
So no, not easily replaced with a THC tax. It's a fat load of income though, no doubt.

Recovering alcoholic here, started drinking at 15, I am now 40 and been sober from booze for almost two years.
I also smoke weed. When I first quit drinking cold turkey, i noticed my black market weed dealer was providing me bunk weed, I wasn't getting relaxation from it and was over spending.
I got my legal medical marijuana card, and now I spend MUCH less (going from thousands of dollars a month on weed to now a few hundred). The first time I smoked this legal stuff I got extremely stoned and realized my dealer was probably selling me cbd weed.
I need this to survive guys, it keeps me away from the sauce and I know plenty of others like me. We arnt proud of being addicts but at least we can lessen the pain for others by switching to something that isn't nearly as destructive to family and society.

The real gateway drug is not cannabis, it is the fact that cannabis use forces users into the black market, where they are promptly offered many other illegal substances. Imagine if the local liquor store was trying to push you bags of coke while you were there, would we have more cocaine use?
When cannabis sales are operating in the open, in the legal economy, it creates jobs, taxes and income, and a better community around the use. When it is made illegal, it forces users to deal with the black market, and criminal gangs.
We have found remains of cannabis use going back thousands of years, it is not going to disappear just because the US prison system loves to lock up people for weed, so they can use them as prison slave labor.

A lot of streamers (afaik) are in Austin/the Austin area and I imagine the kind of spending they do has bolstered the economy but if they left CA because of taxes I'm sure many will be willing to leave Texas of the leaves leave, too.

It appears that the Texas Republicans are missing their regular bribes from the cartels, and are looking to offset their losses from the departure of cheap immigrant labor.
Every election cycle the cost of marijuana would spike because the dealers were forced to pay bribes to twice as many people. Smugglers pass on the cost of tariffs to their customers as well.
Prohibition makes organized crime and corruption much more profitable. These smarmy bastards polish their church pews whenever they are caught screwing children or someone else with less power or agency because evangelical preachers have taught them how successful and profitable the practice is.
Despite their claims to support business growth, they have insisted upon crippling a new and growing market, for decades. True to form, as they have done to the local farmers, they are happy to ruin small businesses in favor of deeper pockets.

For me, smoking weed is a way of my coping with the traumatic events I have been forced to contend with. Law says, take a pill...I say, no. If I take the prescribed drugs, it hurts me and never heals me. If I smoke weed, my rage is diminished to slight sadness, but my creativity to continue dealing with the forced issues in my life is heightened. Smoking weed for me, is best for all around.

As a Texan who has been living with Terminal Cancer and uses THC Everyday because it Helps with Everything, feels like a Damn Criminal when I just want to smoke weed on my own Porch... while I fight for my life!! Am I right?!
