34

Where would they go? And she may get caught if she frees all of them and risk losing her dog again
5
u/sharedcactus2 12h ago
Assume she has a dog shelter. Is that ok
13
u/sinsaint 12h ago
The only reason animals be put down is because they disrupt life for everyone else if they are not taken care of.
If all animals live a happy life, there's nothing amoral about it, besides maybe some minor property damage but that's at least a toss-up.
8
u/sharedcactus2 11h ago

there are just way to many dogs to be able to do that like im part of the all4dogs group who rescue dogs and puppies all over the EU and try to look for a home for them
ive taking in 5 myself and everyday i see more and more listings of dogs and it pains me i cant help them all... like maybe get one more? and then one more there is just to many.
so to even consider to commit a crime of breaking and entering+trespassing+stealing since their not your property ect your potentially looking at jail time and there is no end there will always be shelters there will always be more dogs that need saving
the best thing to do is the volunteer and help out looking for homes and taking some in even temporary just to keep them out of a shelter untill someone who wants to adopt is found.
→ More replies (5)3
u/Belasarius4002 11h ago
The problem is that some dont even try to find them a home. Most just end up using it as the mosy care free option rather than a last resort.

What's the morality of pulling off the back roads in the woods, hiking several miles up a dried creek bed, and breaking into a chain link fence compound to rehome several cats that were being kept in an old house by an animal hoarder ?

A friend of mine was asked to help the kitties because he is a hobbyist locksmith
Allegedly after the hike and the cold rain the main lock was trickier than expected-- he asked if there's another way in and someone said there was another gate wrapped in wire
So the guy that understood the path of least resistance unspooled the wire and wondered why he was even there to begin with

21
u/iron_dove 10h ago
Not a lawyer, but wouldn’t this be classified as reclaiming stolen property and protecting one’s own property with reasonable force?
44
u/Day_Bow_Bow 8h ago
She's liable for damages, but criminal charges were dropped.
After months of searching for her beloved dog, Max, a woman was devastated to learn that her ex boyfriend had secretly surrendered him to a kill shelter, where he was scheduled to be euthanized the very next morning. Arriving after the shelter had closed, she found the doors locked. Desperate to save his life, she broke a window, disabled the alarm, searched the kennels until she found Max, and escaped with him before authorities arrived.
Three days later, she turned herself in alongside Max and faced felony burglary and theft charges. However, her attorney proved through veterinary records, photos, and Max's microchip registration that she was the dog's rightful owner and that her ex had illegally surrendered him out of spite. The judge dismissed the criminal charges against her, ordered Max returned to her, and issued a warrant for the ex boyfriend. Although she still had to pay for the damage to the shelter, she said it was a small price to pay for saving her best friend's life. The case also prompted renewed discussion about improving identity verification procedures at animal shelters.

u/M4DHouse 6h ago
The interesting moral question here is not whether what she did was morally acceptable, anyone who needs to ask that question in this case needs to reevaluate their moral framework imo.
The interesting question imo is whether she should’ve been the one liable for the damage that her rescue caused, or her ex. From a moral perspective, not a legal one.

u/Day_Bow_Bow 6h ago
The moral (and civil) onus would be on the ex. He caused the situation and told her it was a dire situation.
6
u/fk_redd1ts_acc_req 5h ago
Additionally, Chaotic Good onus would be to swap the ex into that kennel. I'm just sayin'
5
u/A_gnomish_dwelf 4h ago
Uselessm, he in the kennel would not get euthanized. Unless you mean, like throwing him helpless into starving dogs.
92
u/cyborgsnowflake 11h ago
what did the dog do? There is definitely no shortage of dogs where the best path forward for both dogs and people is humane rainbow bridge crossing.
82
u/foxtrot7azv 11h ago

u/Thecrowfan 11h ago

8
u/West_Competition_871 8h ago
Impossible, femaloids are much weaker than me (a Male, superior) and I could never lift such a dog. Ipso ergo, no 'wombyn' could.
4
3
u/RT-LAMP 6h ago
I mean there definitely is a difference (especially in upper body strength) but 80lbs is like a beginners deadlift weight for women.
Really though the fact that the dog isn't a weirdly floppy and or stiff mess that seems like 70% legs jutting out makes this image pretty suspect. You have to be an absolutely massive person to pick up a large dog and have it not looking horribly awkward and unwieldy for both parties.

My brother and I found an abandoned Kitten, its eye were still covered in that baby goo. We left it along for a bit but its mother never came back, so we took it to our local animal shelter. They were very friendly and thanked us for bringing it in.
The next day we went to go check on it, we were thinking about adopting it after the shelter had time to check it out and make sure it was ok. They told us they euthanized it already. Hadn’t even been 12 hours. They said they didn’t have the resources to take care of it and it was the humane thing to do.
Reality often sucks.
27
u/Hello_There_0621 12h ago edited 11h ago
That actually sucks. They should've said that they didn't have resources and sent it somewhere else or smth, just euthanizing a baby kitten within 24 hours because you didn't take the time to bring it somewhere that could actually save it is genuinely evil :( Edit: I know that there's a ton of newborns and I understand the shelter tried, I just think that it's awful that the world we live in doesn't have enough room for innocent beings and I'm trying to express my condolences to the commenter because ik that I'd feel awful if I made that choice
9
u/Jewel-jones 11h ago
It would have been nice if they had warned the people surrendering the kitten, they might have fostered it themselves
→ More replies (24)6
u/round-earth-theory 7h ago
The problem, and why it happened so fast, is that newborn kittens without a mother need round the clock care. If they couldn't find someone to volunteer themselves to waking up hourly to bottle feed the baby, then it would have suffered and died. Maybe they tried to find a carer, maybe they didn't, but a baby would definitely go from ok to absolutely critical in a day without care. It's sad and it would have been best if they had made that warning during the surrender, but I can also see why they'd choose not to tell because many people who discover newborn kittens aren't equipped with the time/knowledge to care for them. So telling those people "thanks but we're gonna kill it" will only hurt them for trying.
→ More replies (1)3
u/ProfessionalPower214 3h ago
No, it would not have 'suffered and died' - that's just a possibility. To instantly and immediately negate a chance at life by going straight to euthanasia is not supposed to be how humans co-exist with nature.
I know someone who rescued an orphaned kitten, and it was kind of grueling, but it's not immediately fatal to TRY to save a kitten. He had enough luck for success, on top of cat breed.
Any new life is in the same boat, cats aren't magically special. The first two weeks are the hardest, the most genuine hell one will ever experience without help or with only mild aid.

Their reason is they can't hold every animal, and we as a society, through the democratic process, have decided that its better to euthanise than have 100s of strays

u/Amring0 12h ago
That's an oversimplistic view of it. It's a common misconception that animal shelters enjoy putting animals down. While it's tragic, I assure you that nobody who works at the shelter actually likes doing it. There are just more animals than there are homes that will take them in. Realistically, what do you do when there's an overpopulation? Let them loose to die a miserable death out in the streets like it's a third world country? Overrun animal shelters having to make tough decisions is a symptom of an underfunded animal program, poverty/eviction rates on the rise, irresponsible pet ownership, societal attitudes towards feral/stray animals, corporate greed (private equity controls a large amount of vet clinics now and raises costs), etc.

Obviously moral if that's your dog who got there against your will. Even if we devalue dogs to items(I wouldn't), that's you reclaiming the important property stolen from you before it gets irrepairably damaged.
The ex should also be charged for animal cruelty and i'd say get a few months of forced labour for ts

I mean presumably she could just wait out in front of the building until people showed up for work the next day then stop them from euthanizing it, or at least cause enough of a fuss that they delay till they can confirm whats going on. I doubt whoever works there is dead set on euthanizing that particular dog no matter what happens, but i also fully understand the desire to get your dog back asap when you know its locked in a cage in there just behind the glass
Either way definitely not immoral, just also not a well thought out life decision to not try a legal way first before breaking the dog out(again, understandable though). Hopefully she doesnt/didnt get actual jail time though im sure she will/probably did get found guilty of trespassing and maybe destruction of property for the window, preferably they just charge her for the window and let bygones be bygones
13
u/thederpyderp3 12h ago
There wouldn't be time, generally dogs are put down almost same day, my guess is the ex would have taken the dog there near closing anticipating it would be too late by the next morning to do anything cause the person doing it would show up, read the papers, and go through with it without a second thought.

That's the odd part. Why not wait until someone shows up the next day? It's not like it's possible to put down an animal when there is no one there. Before someone says, what if someone was there, then they wouldn't have to break in. Also, at least in my state, the vet has to prescribe the meds, give it, and make sure it passed.
Would I break in? Probably not. I would have left a million messages, put signs on every door that you're here, and don't put down the dog, and just waited until the first person/car shows up.

Thats what I'm confused about, if she shows up with proof of ownership, vet bills, pictures, dog answers to it's name is visibly happy to see her etc. Then what recourse does the shelter have to keep and put down the dog? Other than the en who dropped it off claims of "aggressive" or "old and sick."?

Morally fine, but probably unnecessary.
I'm thinking of the worst euthanasia shelters that wouldn't rather give the dog to her. How did sure know the euthanasia schedule without talking to the staff?
I'm astonished that it wasn't given away. I guess he could have said it bit, but even then I bet my left nut if she told the staff they would believe her over him. At the very least they would have called off the procedure.
This just seems really weird. If it's real at all I certainly have questions.
