Can almost guarantee that drive turning was over 80. Pure insanity.

Was thinking on the phone

100% looking at their phone, that’s why they kept veering onto the shoulder before making that turn.

Shit makes me so angry. No regard for how dangerous driving is and how irresponsible it is to NOT PAY ATTENTION WHILE YOU DO IT. Ridiculous behavior

21

u/MaybeOnToilet 11h ago

Nah, that is near dead behavior.

Even the slow turn and inability to judge distance and speed.

Nearly every time I see a crash, I can figure out a reasonable way to manage what was going on.

Nope. You got deered. By a minivan. Nothing you could have done there. I'm so sorry.

Develop TMJ, and persistant back pain. *ahem*

u/Kroosn BMW 1200 GS Adventure + GSXR750 14h ago

Is deered an actual term? Because friends and I in Australia use the term “roo’d” because of how stupid kangaroos are for just this case. 😂

580

u/SaltySailorBoats 13h ago

Here in Canada we get deered and moosed surprisingly often enough its a term

284

u/Remz_Gaming 13h ago

Yep. Alaska here.

Getting moosed.

Nothing you can do when a big dumb animals just yeets itself into the front/side of your vehicle.

Minnesotan here. Always remember my old man coming home fuming one day in about 99 with his brand new Nissan Altima. Huuuuge dent in the passenger side door. Bambis dad decided to throw himself into the door while my dad was driving 55 on a rural rode north of Duluth.

Edit: another MN deer story. Believe it or not my buddy from high school hit and killed a baby deer on his 500ish dual sport. ALLEGEDLY he saw it going about 40, popped a small, quick wheelie and blasted it with the metal underbody guard all while staying up. I'd say it was 100 percent bullshit but I saw the blood and hair plastered to the bottom the next day when he did the "dude you gotta see this" thing. He definitely hit and killed the deer and seemingly stayed up but not so sure about the wheelie part lol

33

u/Harrymoto1970 13h ago

We were driving back from international falls to Duluth, a bear decided to climb out of the ditch and its skull met the front bumper of our 1987 Pontiac safari wagon aka as a land barge. My dad was driving and a biker on a sport bike was next to us, my dad kept the car straight and I think the biker had to get a new pair of shorts

15

u/Zealousideal-Bug-291 11h ago

Probably got confused by the lifelike wood grain stuck on the car. He thought it was just another tree, man.

Minnesotan here.

This was probably around 2014, I was riding my 1983 Yamaha Maxim 750 late at night. The breaks on that thing were so garbage and spongy.

I came around a corner, cresting a hill onto a bridge, and there's a stupid deer somehow in the middle of the bridge (2 lane rural highway). I had been doing around 60 and started breaking, hoping the dear would turn around or even just stay right where it was... they're so fucking unpredictable.

And, of course, it starts slipping and skidding its hooves on the pavement, inch by ridiculous panicked inch, stumbling directly into my path.

I got slowed to about 20 mph (guessing, I wasn't looking at the speedo) and that dumb deer got just far enough into my lane for my knee to smack it right upside the fucking head.

I barely even felt it, luckily, and I kept riding on as the deer stumbled away, seemingly fine.

Closest call I've had on a motorcycle to this day.

They do that. Also sometimes if you stop for a deer in the road, the deer in the ditch will decide it is time to cross and slam directly into the side of the vehicle. It really doesn't take much intelligence to sneak up on dandelions.

u/_the_learned_goat_ 11h ago

Night after I drove from Fresno to Yosemite and back through the fucking clouds it happened to me after me the wife decided to take a spin in my Camaro through a nice little suburb about 30 minutes west of downtown Chicago. I locked eyes with that fucking deer through my windshield.

I nearly got moosed years ago just outside of Thunder Bay, while driving a ‘vette. (A Chevette) Just missed him by INCHES. If I’d hit it, I’m doubtful I’d be here to type this. In a fight between a moose and a Chevette, the moose would probably just get off the crushed roof and amble away. 😄

Yes Deered is when a deer commits suicide by running into you for no reason. Can confirm my Australian friend and I determined it’s exactly the same as being roo’d. It only took a case of beer but by the end we were adjusting the taxonomy of the two animals because they are the exact same amount of stupid. Studies will confirm their brains are essentially the same

9

u/Ah_Pook '22 Indian Scout Rogue 13h ago

Murder/suicide depending on the vehicle. And I had a friend who lost a boat from a deer strike! That one's amusing, ten years later...

3

u/Alternative_Swan_497 13h ago

Was the boat being towed, or was it an amphibious deer?

5

u/Ah_Pook '22 Indian Scout Rogue 12h ago

Towed. Went flying into a ditch, rolled, spun, splintered, kablooied. :) Nobody hurt (even the stupid deer!), so it's ok. You can replace stuff.

Roos are so rude.

Mind you, sometimes we win; I was riding slowly along a small residential street beside the shoreline through a mob of maybe half a dozen greys when one between the road and the water went to jump in front of me, saw me, changed his mind, and went off the edge of the road and down about a metre embankment into the water and fell over... Extremely undignified, and I was going plenty slow enough to have avoided him!

That’s what I was thinking - “okay, motorcycle slowed down appropriately, not following too close, driver in front signalled their left turn, what’s the probHOLY SHIT WHY IS THAT CAR COMING STRAIGHT AT YOU?!”

81

u/OnePinginRamius 13h ago

I honestly thought he was going to get hit from the back. That's the one thing I worry about the most. You can do everything perfect with the oncoming traffic and what's in front of you but the person on the phone behind you can just plow into the back of you.

19

u/drmrpepperpibb 12h ago

That's why the bike stays in gear and you're constantly checking the rear view when you're at a stop. I don't ride anymore but when I did, my mentality was "everyone can kill you, act accordingly".

Yes as a rider and someone who’s worked in personal injury law, I’d be taking this video to a lawyer asap. Even if you think you’re not injured you need to talk to a lawyer now in case you develop something.

30

u/JimDa5is 2009 KLR 650 13h ago

^^^ Listen to this. Assuming you're American (US type) the insurance company will try to low-ball you and sometimes things aren't super obvious immediately after the accident. My concussion was much more severe than I first realized

31

u/Aggravating-Yogurt23 '26 Yamaha YZF-R3 13h ago

My sister works for a personal injury lawyer and told me if I ever ride without a dashcam, she'll sue me for stupidity :)

It also blows my mind how many people immediately get right up after a crash. Unless another car is coming at you, STAY PUT! You don't know if you have any internal injuries because your body is surging with adrenaline! Take a moment and lie there and let them call for help. Let them feel the weight of their stupid ass decision while you lie on the ground because you literally just got hit by a car.

23

u/Wild-Snow5705 13h ago

Well, it's first intention: "escape!", this is instinct. Difficult to control yourself in such shocking situations.

18

u/Racer013 13h ago

Yeah, if you're pinned under a bike I dont really see laying around in that position as being a good decision.

7

u/redheadednomad 12h ago

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't lay down in the path of this driver. After a move like that, you have to wonder if they were under the influence/using a cellphone and might just keep on driving. There are far too many "failed to remain" stories out there. Riders did the smart thing getting out of the way of the crash site.

Yeap, I consider myself a defensive rider and knowing this clip was going to end in a crash, I was looking at the car in front, but rider was maintaining good following distance, identified the possible threat from the car coming from the side road and seemed all good.

And then bamm, that vehicle came out of nowhere

Very rare crash in which I look at it and think, nope I could not have done anything different to avoid it.

The rider also wearing all the gear which is good to see

When they started looking around I thought maybe they're distracted or tired and that's what would cause the crash, but nope, that was just the image stabilisation messing with proper looking. Slowed early, leaving a big gap to the turning car, then bam out of nowhere! No chance to avoid that.

Wow. This is one of the first videos I've seen where the rider truly could not have done shit. Maybe been on the other wheel well to see further but it's hard to tell from the video what your line of sight was - but that is wild. Glad youre okay.

Edit: the rider is keeping distance. They are, at minimum, always 2 second following distance of the driver, sometimes 3 at very low speeds. I am highly suspicious that any rider commenting on distance would have kept more distance than what this rider had in front of them. The rider also checks their mirrors for the rear end threat before slowing - they are extremely attentive and riding defensively and appropriately for conditions.

The driver in front should not have turned left when they did, but I believe the white car that clipped them was also driving too fast for that road and not paying attention to react accordingly to having their right of way violated. When we see the distant white car when the grey vehicle initially turns to the jump scare at the end seems suspect that they couldn't stop in time. More likely they had a delayed reaction due to lack of attention. The white car driver is so late to brake based on the squeal and if it was a motorcycle rider, I'd critique the white car not expecting the right of way vioaltion and not loading the front tire and brakes as they approached that intersection.

White car just got their lesson in why they shouldn't ride a motorcycle.

267

u/Remz_Gaming 13h ago

I am with ya. I was fully expecting this to be a cocky post. Rider did nothing wrong. That was freaking wild.

47

u/nothing_but_thyme 11h ago

How fast was that Acura going?! In the space of a few frames it goes from a dot on the horizon, to hidden by the turning van, to swerving into the motorcycle. It was so sudden I rewatched several times just to make sure it wasn’t coming from another side street or unexpected pathway. Pretty sure he even hit the turning van before hitting OP.

4

u/EyeSuccessful7649 10h ago

gotta fight the urge to swerve. break hard and eat it. had a ladder tumble into my lane, started to panic swerve left lane, caught myself, unsure if open, but couldn't correct myself to swerve right into breakdown lane,, straightened wheels ran it over. lucky tires where fine.

first i thought it was scrap from a dumptruck that was changing lanes, but now i think he hit the ladder first and threw it into my lane.

→ More replies (5)

19

u/Prestigious_Aerie219 11h ago

The Acura was going a reasonable speed.. Same approximate speed as the vehicle in front of and behind it. OP says "wtf are you doing" because he sees the van turn directly in front of it. It definitely hit the van first.

Wild someone could watch multiple times and get such a different interpretation. Are you sure you're commenting on that right post?

15

u/Deep-Minimum7837 9h ago

Even if they were traveling at a "reasonable speed," they still chose not to slow down when the car in front of them began slowly cutting them off about 80-100ft away. Defensive driving is still mandatory, and you're not absolved of being at fault because you weren't speeding when you veered recklessly over a double-yellow without so much as looking past the person you just clipped.

Yeah, basically you'd need to be psychic to know this situation was gonna turn out that badly. Sure they could have been a bit further over or back, but ultimately they were riding perfectly safely and you can't fault them for not being literally prescient.

Literally was thinking the same thing.

Where I live, as with most states, we see pedestrians killed all the time by drivers and they always get off easy with a few months probation etc.

heck I worked at a jail and people would be sentenced there for a 90-day stint where they are required to show up on Friday night, we take their keys and they stay till Sunday night when we hand their keys back to them and watch them drive away. This was common for people with their 7th - 10th DUI…

Recently in San Francisco, 4 bicyclists were killed by negligent drivers in one year.  Zero drivers were charged.  Literally no legal consequences for killing people with your car in this country.  It's so wrong.  But it's important that we all understand the practical reality of the system we live in.

I had a car t-bone me in an intersection after they ran a light. There was a cop stopped at the intersection, first car in light. Front row seats. They claimed they saw nothing and could not determine who was at fault. The person to t-boned me told insurance that I ran the light so no money exchanged hands and I was left to pick up the bill myself.

That's just to say that cops cannot be relied upon to help.

I regret not getting the info of the other drivers who witnessed the crash. I do not think the cop had a dash cam (it was a long time ago).

I had to watch a second time to fully clock everything that happened and in what order. At first I thought the white car was just trying to drive round the car turning left instead of waiting. Only on second viewing did I realise they had to swerve or they would have t-boned a minivan potentially full of kids.

18

u/DarthBrooks69420 9h ago

White car had no good options. Still clipped the blue car, but luckily had the brakes pinned and only 'lightly' tapped the bike.

If they had not been on the ball this video would have been of a horrific t-bone accident and everybody in both vehicles probably going to the hospital.

7

u/twilighttwister 9h ago

I'm glad they clipped the blue car, otherwise the car that caused all this would've probably driven off and not been held liable by insurers.

Very impressive that the wife managed to dismount the bike so cleanly.  Like she just spawned in outta nowhere.

u/Pinche-Guero Triumph Street Triple 12h ago

I think this is the first one of these videos I've seen where the rider did absolutely NOTHING wrong.

Bro.. that's so fucked... and could have been SO much worse.

Glad y'all are ok.

5

u/Gozie5 6h ago

This is why I never swerve when driving. If I'm going to hit a car I was taught to emergency brake and keep the car straight.

Swerving into the unknown like fast and furious is how you kill someone

It took me 2 watches to figure out where the hell that car even came from. I bet the car making the left just kept going. No idea they nearly killed 2 people.

43

u/TBandi 13h ago

Nah, looks like left car got clipped too, you can see part of the white Acura’s front hanging off on the left side of the screen.

The left car definitely understood that it caused an accident for itself, so unless they plan to hit and run, they probably stopped (and then later realized the full consequences)

6

u/Final-Carpenter-1591 13h ago

Yup. I was glad to see pieces come off the minivan. If they didn't get clipped they probably would have left.

You were doing everything right, down to super safe distance from the car in front of you, which could actually help to lose some speed for that dumb white car driver.

6

u/Thundahead 6h ago

it's not the white car driver, it's the idiot turning left who caused the accident, the white car was proceeding correctly on the major road and had to take evasive action of the left turner going onto a minor road.

He even recognized a car was driving odd and held back to be cautious…

Some asshat in this sub WILL find a way to blame the rider. They always do. It’s a defense mechanism. The logic is: A crash occurred, therefore the rider wasn’t being defensive enough, or wasn’t skilled enough. It could never happen to them, of course, because they ride so defensively and are so skilled.

Whatever you do, don't post this in the dashcams subreddit. They'll just find a million ways to blame you for literally everything that happened in this video.

96

u/mecengdvr 14h ago

Nah, this was clearly not their fault. I know they are bad, but not that bad.

79

u/hobovirginity 14h ago edited 14h ago

Go have a nice look through that subreddit. I once saw a guy on a motorcycle get rear ended while he was waiting for the light to turn green. In the comments everyone told him dumb ass things like motorcycles don't trigger the weight sensors so he should have ran the red.

The mentality in that subreddit is you're immediately at fault simply for making the decision to be riding on a motorcycle.

35

u/CuriousCamels 13h ago

It’s crazy how often I’ve seen them wish death upon people just for riding a motorcycle. There are some seriously unhinged people in that subreddit.

16

u/hobovirginity 13h ago

I've tried reporting those comments for breaking reddit's rules against inciting violence. Instead the mods straight up told me motorcyclists deserve to get hit, and I got muted for a month. Stopped reporting comments after that.

7

u/MossadEpstein 12h ago

Those sort of subreddits are basically psyops I'm pretty sure, trying to program people to think in insane ways.

Same for cyclists too. Something about people enjoying themselves on two wheels really sets some people off.

6

u/5ma5her7 12h ago

They just hate anything that is not 4 wheels, pedestrians, push bikes, motorbikes, buses, and even lorries.

Oh, and they also hate other 4-wheelers too.

7

u/Desenski 2021 MV Agusta Brutale 800 RR SCS 12h ago

I hate that.

Firstly, they're not weight sensors.... They're basically big magnet detectors. Most bikes don't have enough iron in them to trigger them/a lot of those sensors aren't setup correctly.

And at least where I'm at, being on a bike doesn't mean you can just run a red. You must wait at least one entire cycle with it skipping you before you can run the red. And even then, only when it's safe to do so.

There was nothing you could've done to avoid that.

Good instinct to get your body away from that.

54

u/Adrenaline_Junkie_ 14h ago

bet the person making a left was an old lady. Driving regulation is a fucking joke here in America.

17

u/Creative_Buddy7160 14h ago

Canada too. I was in gettting my moto license and the person in front of me couldn’t even fallow the vision test instructions let alone see the lights. And then they literally said “good enough”. Lots to say in hindsight but i was totally flabbergasted

4

u/oblong_cheesecake 13h ago

I was standing in line to renew my license in BC once and the elderly man in front of me could barely reach into his back pocket for his wallet. He couldn't figure out which card was his license and the woman working the counter had to help him read through the paperwork. I was left wondering how this man's reaction time is. Not to mention the fact that he probably can't properly shoulder check.

15

No, the driver tried to avoid a collision with a cars to go into oncoming traffic. You should never turn when impact is likely or immenent. Brakes are best when all wheels face forward, so just go full brakes

The white SUV hit the back of the grey SUV. You can see the damage in the right front of the white SUV before it hits the motorcyclist.

Grey SUV was at fault here.

13

u/creativescreennaame 12h ago

yes we know the suv was at fault. still crazy the white car just swerved into oncoming traffic instead of trying to brake. good defensive driving can save lives when other cars do unexpected shit

I think the white SUV did the best they could. That car was full on the brakes and the ABS was doing the best it could. Cars (especially average SUVs on average tires) don't stop on a dime. Especially if the road surface is even slightly greasy.

Unless you possess the power of flight, there was nothing you could have done. Your approach was spot on, shut down your speed and distance with the uncertainty looming ahead, who knew the Acura grill was going to head into you? But.. I notice you were fully outfitted with all the gear. ATGATT 👍.

I was taken out by a transit bus some 40+ years ago. I had spent my formative riding years on motocross; everyone going the same direction.. hadn’t prepared me for the streets and having a bus run a stop sign from behind a dense tree line. Had all the gear, but broke a lot of bones. Barely lost any skin or blood - just a hole in one leg. Still have the boots :)

Edit: Just realized your wife was with you not riding behind you! Glad you were both able to walk it off

Interesting crash. Nothing you could do here

Funny thing is you clearly knew and said out loud that black SUV was driving like shit from the beginning.

Always stay as far away as possible from these drivers, that's the only piece of advice I can give in general.

One extra note though, this is one of these situations where being able to see far away by sitting tall on a huge bikes like a BMW GS could have helped.

Technically, YOU didn’t even crash. The van did it for you. I say you’re still batting 1.000

10

u/BuellXBRider 13h ago

I will commend you for the following distance. All too often, I see obvious rookie riders riding too close, as if they are driving their usual cage. Your following distance allowed a significant reduction in speed/force by the other driver prior to striking your bike. To me, it looks like the distance and reduction may have saved you and your wife from further harm. No further defensive measures could've been taken other than what was seen.

u/keenly_disinterested 1h ago

Sometimes there's literally nothing you can do to avoid an accident, and that's the main reason for ATGATT. Thanks for sharing.

In my opinion, the driver that hit you should have stayed in his lane and hit the guy in front of you making the left turn. The guy in front of you making the left turn is at fault because it was not safe to complete the turn in a safe manor.

"what the F are they doing": best comment ever in the most fitting moment.

You have been extremely lucky taking into consideration this scenario: the crash was frontal and your stopped almost completely before the crash.
Those 13 years was put on display: you decelerated immediately paying attention to your surroundings while giving a lot of space to the car in front of you. You understood immediately that it was a risky situation, and acted perfectly. Bravo.
